Agate

The name “agate” comes from the Achates River in Sicily, Italy. Found in the namesake river, the gemstone was known to have healing medicinal powers, which was utilized by the Neolithic people as a healing amulet.

Hematite

Despite the name, we have evidence that Egyptians also mined malachite. They mixed it into cosmetics, while later civilizations would use the mineral in protective amulets. In St. Petersburg, Russia, the Hermitage museum has an entire room dedicated to malachite.

Pyrite

“Pyrite” comes from the Greek word for “fire,” due to how it has combustive properties. The Romans noted that it would ignite if coming into contact with sparks. They saw the potential for it to become a weapon and named the metal for its fiery personality.
